What is Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) and why is it important?

Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is the amount of light available for photosynthesis, which is light in the 400 to 700 nanometer wavelength range usually expressed in µmol (photons) m-2 s-1, though it can also be expressed in microEinsteins.

PAR is important because it is the sole energy source used by plants for photosynthesis reactions that convert physical solar energy into biomass.
